KISORO, UGANDA; Healthcare delivery at Nyarusiza Health Centre III in Kisoro District has been paralyzed following severe flooding that has left the facility inaccessible to patients and medical staff. The crisis was highlighted on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, during a monitoring visit by a United Nations committee, the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), and other development partners. "When it rains heavily, we cannot move from one ward to another. Patients who come for treatment get stuck on the way, and even ambulances cannot reach the facility," one health worker told the visiting team. KISORO HOSPITAL FORCED TO BURN MEDICAL WASTE AS CONTRACTOR FAILS TO COLLECT - HEALTH RISKS FEARED:

Why Parliament Suspended Enforcement of Charcoal Ban: What It Means for Ugandans

Image
Parliament has suspended enforcement of the charcoal ban, a decision that has sparked mixed reactions across the country. The ban was intended to protect forests and promote clean cooking energy, but enforcement has faced challenges on the ground. For many Ugandans, charcoal remains the most practical option. It is readily available, can be purchased in small quantities, and works with cooking equipment they already own.  Alternatives come with barriers. Gas requires a stove and regular refills. Electric cooking requires suitable appliances, reliable electricity and the ability to pay the bill. A household that receives a free gas cylinder may still struggle to refill it. A small restaurant that switches fuels may face higher operating costs. And in rural areas, access to alternative fuels can be limited. As seen on NBS The Debrief today, the suspension gives government time to address affordability and access to clean cooking alternatives before enforcing the ban. -What do y...
