KISORO HOSPITAL FORCED TO BURN MEDICAL WASTE AS CONTRACTOR FAILS TO COLLECT - HEALTH RISKS FEARED:

KISORO: Kisoro Hospital is facing a serious medical waste management crisis after a company contracted by the Ministry of Health allegedly failed to consistently collect and transport medical waste for safe disposal.

Medical Superintendent *Dr. Emmanuel Bahane* says the lapses have left the hospital with no option but to burn infectious waste on-site, raising grave concerns over potential health and environmental risks.

In the photo obtained by this publication, heaps of medical waste are seen burning openly within the hospital premises, with thick smoke billowing - a practice that contravenes Ministry of Health guidelines on safe medical waste disposal.

Open burning of medical waste releases toxic fumes including dioxins and furans, which pose serious risks to patients, health workers, and the surrounding community.

Efforts to get a comment from the Ministry of Health *@MinofHealthUganda* on the contracted company and the delayed collections were still ongoing by press time.
