Former military intelligence boss Maj Gen James Birungi has been released from detention, reports indicate.
Birungi, who has been in detention since August 2025, was released following an announcement by the Chief of Defence Forces, Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba.
In a statement posted on his X platform on Thursday morning, Gen Muhoozi said he had forgiven the former spy chief.
"MG. Birungi committed great crimes against our army and people. He should rightly have faced a very severe sentence. However, I believe in Jesus Christ, who always teaches forgiveness. Christ forgave me; who am I not to forgive myself? I have forgiven him. We will release him soon."
Maj Gen Birungi is a former head of Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence (CMI), now Defence Intelligence and Security. He has been one of the most powerful intelligence officers in the UPDF.
Details about the conditions of his release remain unclear, but sources close to the army say he has already reunited with his family.
