Kisoro: Nyarusiza Health Centre III Flooded - Patients and Health Workers Stranded as UN & UNICEF Visit
KISORO, UGANDA; Healthcare delivery at Nyarusiza Health Centre III in Kisoro District has been paralyzed following severe flooding that has left the facility inaccessible to patients and medical staff.
The crisis was highlighted on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, during a monitoring visit by a United Nations committee, the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), and other development partners.
Health workers at the facility told the delegation that heavy seasonal rains have caused water to submerge internal passages, wards, and access roads, putting the lives of patients and health workers at serious risk.
"When it rains heavily, we cannot move from one ward to another. Patients who come for treatment get stuck on the way, and even ambulances cannot reach the facility," one health worker told the visiting team.
Nyarusiza Health Centre III serves thousands of residents in Nyarusiza Sub-county and surrounding areas in Kisoro, a district that is highly prone to flooding and landslides due to its mountainous terrain near the Virunga ranges.
The visiting UN and UNICEF officials are assessing the damage and humanitarian needs, with emergency supplies and water purification support expected to be mobilized.
Patients with chronic illnesses and pregnant mothers are said to be the most affected, as they are forced to walk through flooded paths to seek care.
